What is Supercritical Fluid Extraction?

It is a method of extracting essential oils and other ingredients from organic matter using a highly efficient, highly effective and environmentally friendly process. Using a supercritical fluid (liquid carbon dioxide) at room temperatures does not compromise the purity of the extracted product, nor are the by-products harmful to the environment as they are with alternative solvent-based extraction methods.

In a society that requires purer foods, SFE technology transforms familiar substances such as water and carbon dioxide into important allies in the task of improving the quality of what we eat and put into our bodies. It has been only in the last two decades that producers have begun to exploit supercritical fluids in industry. The interest in supercritical fluids is the result of the search worldwide for more environmentally friendly technologies.

The Salient Features of our SCF Extraction

The use of supercritical fluid extraction techniques guarantees exceptional purity of the extracted product compared with the more usual solvent-based extraction. Our extracts are clear, transparent and contain almost every non-polar ingredient present in the original raw material. The moisture content is also reduced and the resulting extracts are free from
  • Solvent residues
  • Decomposition or hydrolysis products
  • Heavy metals
  • Inorganic substances
  • Polar substances

  • The quality of Supercritical Fluid Extraction enables top grade food quality standards, pharmaceutical standards and cosmetic standards to be met.

We have completed the requirements for both HCCAP and ACO Australian Certified Organic Certification.

    The Extraction Process

  • The extract consists of essential oils, active ingredients, fatty oils, colouring matter and in general all oil soluble substances.
  • The residue consists of all other substances that are present in the raw materials.
  • The oil soluble substances are a range of chemicals with difference molecular weights. They exhibit a solubility pattern inversely proportional to their molecular weights at any given temperature and pressure. The presence of different organic substituted groups also affects their solubility.
  • Targeting a specific ingredient. The lower molecular weight components are extracted faster and have a higher solubility in CO2, while higher molecular weight components have a lower solubility and consequently lower extraction rates.By varying the temperature and pressure we can separate these components during the extraction process.
  • Once the extract is obtained it is clarified, water is separated out and the material is stored in containers. This extract is known as the total extract.
  • Supercritical Fractionation

Sometimes there is a need to extract low boiling point essential oils or other active ingredients from the high boiling point components of the combined total extract. This can be done using our liquid supercritical fractionation column. This is a continuous operation with respect to both the extract and the CO2. The lower end of the fractionator is a mixture of unextracted material. The upper section carries the extracted low boiling point components along with the CO2.
